Project Overview

Background

Mantis Origins: Born from Anthony's search for his mother's policy, Mantis aims to simplify insurance for all Nigerians. Teaming up with cybersecurity expert Seun, they envisioned an easy-to-navigate and educational health insurance comparison site.

Tech Fleet: An online community connecting designers and clients. Members apply, join projects, and gain experience in design, research, content, and development.

Challenge

In 2021, only 3% of Nigerians had health insurance, and skepticism about its value is widespread. Mantis aims to address this by introducing a user-friendly health insurance comparison tool, uniquely designed for the Nigerian market.

Solution

  1. Create a web application in the project's early phase for users to explore the best local insurance offers.

  2. Construct an intuitive and user-friendly insurance aggregator that is easy to understand and navigate.

  3. Ensure users have convenient access to a variety of insurance options.

The Project Scope

Understanding stakeholder need

Our team conducted thorough stakeholder interviews and workshops to gain insights into their goals and expectations. As residents of Lagos, stakeholders have brought valuable insights that help us to shape essential features of Mantis.

Informing users about the clinics available within a specific plan and outlining the associated benefits is crucial.
Unlike platforms such as Skyscanner or Kayak, users are not compelled to create an account for searching or comparing.
Convincing users of the value of insurance coverage is essential, addressing their primary concern that it might be perceived as a financial burden or a waste of money.

Mantis Value

Mantis's main values guide us in making a platform for users. We focus on fixing everyday issues and making sure everyone can easily use it.

Accessible

We make sure it's easy for everyone to get important information. Our focus is on making the whole experience straightforward and user-friendly.

Tranparent

Mantis promises to be crystal clear with users about the cost of plans and what they include. No surprises – just trustworthy and straightforward information.

Easy-to-understand

Our team is making sure that when users read about policies, coverage, and other details on our site, it's all in everyday language.

Navigating Challenges

We had some challenges with our project that were beyond our control, which made our planning and design process a bit unpredictable.

One unexpected issue was that it took us longer than we thought to find people to talk to for surveys and interviews. Because of this delay, we had to change our approach. Instead of waiting, we decided to start looking into what other companies are doing and what the market is like. We figured that once we got enough information from talking to people, we could then use that to make the changes we needed in our project. So, we switched up the order of things to make the most of our time and keep things moving.

Research

Understanding the user need

Research Goal

The primary goal of our research is to address the skepticism among Nigerians regarding the value of health insurance and to understand their specific needs and concerns. We aim to gather insights that will guide the development of Mantis to better meet the users where they are, ultimately enhancing the adoption of health insurance in the Nigerian market

Research Objective

  • Evaluate current methods of presenting health insurance information and refine formats for transparent communication.

  • Identify user needs and preferences for searching health services; prototype and test care-specific filters for improved usability.

  • Assess existing knowledge levels about the practical benefits of health insurance and develop effective educational materials.

  • Explore cultural and socio-economic factors influencing Nigerians' attitudes towards health insurance.

Research Methodology

The design and research teams collaborated closely to ensure a holistic approach to understanding the audience and conducting competitive analysis.

Research Findings

Design an interface that shows monthly and yearly costs upfront during insurance selection.

Provide users with the power to customize insurance options based on their needs.

Make information easy to understand for users to boost their confidence in the insurance buying process.

Create short and engaging educational content to explain the practical benefits of health insurance.

Meet Emmanuel and Ezekiel

Based on research, we created a persona to help guide the design process.

POV & how might we...

We took what we learned from studying our competition, and our design team decided on the most important features. We did this by brainstorming together using Figjam, a collaborative tool. This helped us see which changes would make the biggest difference without needing a lot of effort. After doing this, we found out which features would have the most impact on how our project functions

Recommendation

After determining the most crucial features through the impact-effort matrix, the Design team focused on three primary user flows

1

Landing Page

Includes FAQs, Testimonials, educational content, and customer communication.

2

Getting a Quote

Involves forms that guide users to the most accurate results.

3

Quote Comparison

Provides a page where users can review options, view details about insurance, and compare different choices

Site Map

I created a site map to determine where the feature would exist in the website.

Mantis

Task Flow

My primary focus, along with another design apprentice, was to create a process for users to Get Insurance Quotes

Mid-fi wireframes

Leading with a selection option for users to choose the insurance they want. Cards and clear language provide just the right amount of information. Users can also find additional details in the FAQ section.

With just one click after providing personal details, users will receive detailed information about insurance plan quotations from various providers. The questions are formulated based on the results of the research team's survey, using simple language to ensure easy understanding for users.

UI Kits

I also laid the foundation for the design system. This includes creating a style guide for important elements like buttons and deciding on the look for icons, shades, spacings, and corner radius. This organized method ensures our project has a consistent and unified design language.

Final Design

High fidelity details

  • Make the main health insurance choices stand out with bold colors or larger fonts for a clear visual hierarchy.

  • Design an easy-to-use section for users to pick health insurance, catering to individuals, families, or employment, using clear visuals for each choice.

  • Ensure visibility and interaction by placing the "Get Quote" buttons where users can easily spot and click them. Utilize a distinct color to grab attention.

  • To get the best prices when looking for insurance, users should provide essential information.

  • Streamline the information process with well-designed input forms featuring clear labels and placeholders for easy user guidance.

  • The progress indicators provide a visual guide, helping users understand where they are in the insurance application process. This enhances transparency and reduces user anxiety.

  • The review and edit section allows users to double-check and edit their information before proceeding, enhancing the accuracy of the application

  • Clear calls-to-action guide users through the process, ensuring a smooth flow and reducing confusion.

  • To meet what users want, we made a Home Page that's easy to use. It tells you about insurance benefits, shows our partners, shares user thoughts, and helps find the best local prices with a simple click.

Project Takeaway

Final thoughts

In our initial project phase, we successfully set the stage by defining MVP requirements and core values. This strong foundation directed the design of a user-friendly landing page, a streamlined quote-request process, and a method for comparing insurance plans. Throughout these initiatives, our guiding principles were the core values we had set. While we gathered specific statistics and information tailored to our market, there's a realization that our designs could have been more enriched with insights from a broader interview pool.

The logistical challenges of scheduling interviews and finding participants in Nigeria posed setbacks to our UXR team's timeline. Unfortunately, we fell short of sharing our designs with a testing group for feedback.

Next Steps

As we transition into phase 2, collaboration with stakeholders is essential to ensure alignment with potential shifts in goals. We'll use what we learned in phase 1 to improve how we understand users, refine content, especially for screening questions, and present mid-fidelity wireframes for comprehensive usability testing.

Reflections

Dealing with challenges in setting goals and working with a team taught me a lot. It emphasized how important it is for everyone to be on the same page and be flexible when designing for different kinds of people. Even though we couldn't talk to as many users as we wanted, this project helped me grow in designing, working together, and communicating. Looking back, I see that spending more time talking to users could have made this project even better.
